Tools of the Trade: Needles

In the realm of bespoke tailoring, every detail matters. While fabrics and finishes often take centre stage, it's the humble needle that plays a pivotal role in bringing a garment to life.

At LAWTON, we understand that the choice of needle is as crucial as the cut of the cloth. Selecting the appropriate needle ensures that each stitch is precise, the fabric remains uncompromised, and the final garment meets our exacting standards.

Different fabrics demand different approaches. Our selection of machine needles reflects this understanding:

  • Size 70: Ideal for delicate fabrics like silks and linings, ensuring smooth stitching without causing snags or puckering.

  • Size 80: A versatile choice for medium-weight materials such as cottons and standard wools, providing consistent stitch quality.

  • Size 90: Suited for heavier wools, offering the strength needed to penetrate dense weaves without compromising stitch integrity.

  • Size 100: Reserved for the thickest overcoatings, this needle handles substantial fabrics with ease, maintaining durability and precision.

Using the wrong needle can lead to issues like skipped stitches, tension problems, or even fabric damage. Precision in needle selection is non-negotiable.

Hand sewing is where craftsmanship truly shines. We favor "Betweens" needles for their balance of strength and finesse:

  • Size 5 Betweens: Robust and sturdy, perfect for securing buttons with confidence.

  • Size 7 Betweens: Ideal for basting and mark stitching, allowing for temporary seams that guide the final construction.

  • Size 9 Betweens: Fine and precise, these needles are used for finishing touches like felling and buttonhole stitches, ensuring a refined appearance.

Each needle choice reflects our commitment to excellence, ensuring that every hand-stitched detail contributes to the garment's overall quality.

Our dedication to craftsmanship means that even the smallest tools are chosen with care. By selecting the right needle for each task, we uphold the standards that define LAWTON tailoring.
